At our October 30 meeting, the communications department's very own Amy Fountain came and spoke on internships.

Internships are a great asset to have on one's resume. Although it's not required, internships are something that can benefit any college student, and employers love the added experience when hiring somebody. However, many college interns can be taken advantage of and need to be sure employer's are aware of what a legitimate internship is.

An internship should be a supervised experience with a learning component. Whether an internship is paid or unpaid, your time is important. You need to be sure that you are learning information pertinent to your field by a supervisor who is qualified to be teaching you. Don't be afraid to ask questions like, "What's their skill set and background knowledge?" or "Could this be a paid opportunity?"

Students can even receive course credit by having an internship if they take CO 4053. This class is taught by Amy Fountain herself and does not meet in person. Students simply must turn in documentation proving they are working the required minimum hours of an internship that applies to their major. Three credit hours can be received from this class.
